Competitive interactions shape plant responses to nitrogen fertilization and drought: evidence from a microcosm experiment with Lilium bulbiferum L. and Secale cereale L.

چکیده

Abstract Many recent studies have analysed plant species responses to environmental change, but interactive effects of global change drivers and how they are modulated by biotic interactions still poorly understood. In a mesocosm experiment, we studied the nitrogen (N) fertilization drought events on growth these shaped competitive interactions, using segetal community typical lowlands central Europe (composed Lilium bulbiferum (segetal species) Secale cereale (crop species)). We expected that N increases sensitivity (negative interaction effect), interspecific competition with Secale. showed opposing (second year experiment): Whilst aboveground belowground biomass almost doubled fertilization, no response or decreased, respectively, providing advantage. tissue dieback (as proxy for vigour) was 22% in 35% treatments (control: 6%), reached 91% when combining treatments. Increasing strongly related decreasing (root) biomass, caused both negative direct combined (N + drought), indirect acting via treatment-induced increase biomass. Our results demonstrate can shape growth. This knowledge turn could be important conservation, particularly face ongoing shifts conditions.

Hybrids and amphiploids of Aegilops ovata L. with Secale cereale L.: production, morphology and fertility.

Hybrids (2n = 3x = 21) between Aegilops ovata and Secale cereale were produced via embryo rescue. Most hybrid morphological traits were intremediate between parents, the plants grew vigorously but were completely sterile. The average frequency of chromosome associations at metaphase I was 19.57-20.19 univalents and 0.40-0.86 rod bivalents. The fertility of the hybrids was restored by doubling t...

Towards a whole-genome sequence for rye (Secale cereale L.).

We report on a whole-genome draft sequence of rye (Secale cereale L.). Rye is a diploid Triticeae species closely related to wheat and barley, and an important crop for food and feed in Central and Eastern Europe. Through whole-genome shotgun sequencing of the 7.9-Gbp genome of the winter rye inbred line Lo7 we obtained a de novo assembly represented by 1.29 million scaffolds covering a total l...

A Cytogenetic Analysis of the Hybrid Secale Cereale L. x Secale Montanum Guss. and Its Progeny.

ITHIN the genus Secale L. hybrids between various perennial forms have all shown regular meiotic chromosome behavior as have hybrids between different annual strains belonging to S. cereale L. In all hybrids between S. cereale and perennial forms, however, a translocation figure has been observed a t metaphase I in the PMC’s. The maximum association is apparently a ring-of-six, but this is seld...

Hydroxamic acids in Secale cereale L. and the relationship with their antifeedant and allelopathic properties.

Contents of the hydroxamic acids 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIBOA), and 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA) in leaves and roots of 14 cultivars of rye, Secale cereale L., were determined. Dynamics of accumulation in three cultivars were evaluated. DIBOA was the main cyclic hydroxamic acid in leaves but the contents differed significantly between the cultivars. Both DI...

Cultivar and year-to-year variation of phytosterol content in rye (Secale cereale L.).

Intake of phytosterols (and -stanols) has been shown to decrease the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and thus protect against development of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, studies on the cultivar and year-to-year variation in phytosterol content in rye grains have been performed. The phytosterol content and composition of different rye cultivars, grown under identical conditio...
